Cannes Film Festival 2022: Best Looks from the Red Carpet
The outbreak of World War II forced the cancellation of the first Cannes Film Festival, which was to be held on the French Riviera in 1939 to replace the Venice Film Festival; in September 1946, seven years after its conception, the Festival finally rolled out the red carpet, with 18 countries participating. The festival is still held every May today. Today, 89 countries participate in the annual May festival, and while film is the highlight of the Cannes Film Festival, fashion is also a highlight of the Cannes Film Festival. This year's event, which runs through May 28, will feature not only films, but also dinners and parties attended by A-list celebrities such as Anne Hathaway and Julianne Moore. Like the Academy Awards (open in new tab) and the Met Gala (open in new tab), attendees will show off their best fashions in custom designs and haute couture.
Stylist Alexandra Imgles (opens in new tab), who dressed French actress Léa Seydoux (you may recognize her from the 2011 film Midnight in Paris) at this year's festival, talked about what it takes to be red carpet ready She spoke about the 'Léa and I started discussing ideas for the Cannes Film Festival during the BAFTAs back in March. I'm glad we had enough time. We wanted something a little more European, something different from the look we've been going for lately," she said. The dress code for the event was strictly black tie, with paparazzi in attendance. Still, Imgls feels that being an international film festival, people dress more creatively and freely.
Some of Imguls' favorite past Cannes Film Festival outfits include Sophia Loren's old Hollywood glamour look from the 1950s. Recent candidates for best-dressed include Julianne Moore of Chanel and Diane Kruger of Vivienne Westward; here are the 2022 Cannes Film Festival's best-dressed.
