Read MoreSeason 3 of Netflix's hit "Umbrella Academy" sets up another apocalypse, with the Umbrellas triggering their grandfather's paradox and causing the Kugelblitz, a glowing black hole that slowly sucks the universe dry. If that's not enough, the seven heroes are holed up at the Hotel Obsidian after being kicked out of their home by their manipulative father after angering a new team of heroes called the Sparrow Academy. The new episodes are packed with several fun plot points, from a Romeo and Juliet romance to a forced father-son bond.
In the 10-episode finale, the world has already been destroyed. It goes further than ever in terms of the degree of shock, with most of the Sparrows and two of the Umbrellas killed before reaching the massive endgame cliffhanger.
The finale begins with the remaining Umbrellas and Sparrows-Five, Victor, Allison, Diego, Lila, Sparrow Ben, and Sloan-appearing in the mirror in the White Buffalo Room. Five doesn't believe him, but the group concentrates on defeating the guardians of the Hotel Oblivion and finding a way to reset the universe.
We get some emotional beats as the family prepares to fight the Guardian. Five tries to convince Victor that his father killed Klaus and Luther, and he suspects Allison was involved in it. She made a deal with Hargreaves to get everyone into the portal, not knowing that he would kill Luther for it. Alison is willing to do anything for a chance to get her daughter back, and she cooperates with the elder's plan: to defeat the Guardian and find the emblem of the seven bells.
As the protagonists search the different floors of the hotel for the emblems, Hargreaves gets the worst of it. The hotel turns out to be a kind of multidimensional maze, with multiple guardians on each numbered path. Families can be on the same level, go in different directions, or split into different paths attacking different themed guardians, ranging from medieval warriors to samurai.
While the Sparbuleau family was dealing with the hotel guardians, Klaus and Luther were relaxing in the desert afterlife, watching TV and eating Hawaiian pizza. (The scientist on the TV gives a little foreshadowing speech about the universe being on "white buffalo horns.")
Klaus and Luther are watching TV and eating Hawaiian pizza in the afterlife.
Klaus has accepted his fate, but Luther is angry with Hargreaves and still upset that his father was an alien all along. He fights with Klaus in several versions, convincing him to return to the land of the living and find a way to save his family (which is mainly Sloane). Klaus goes to the Oblivion lobby and finds a way to confront Hargreaves, only to knock him out after the big man admits to killing Luther.
Despite their bickering and personal drama (including Five distrusting Allison, Diego and Lilia's baby drama, and Sparrowben being an overall jerk), the two families are still more powerful working together, and they all beat the Guardians. Before the boss Guardian can get to them first, they rally in the center of the hotel and find Klaus. It looks like they are going to lose, as they are all beaten to a pulp and Five loses an arm, but a familiar face comes to their rescue.
As the Guardian puts his hand on Sloane, Luthor, whom Klaus has summoned, appears. This apparition of Luthor has a physical form and is able to embrace Sloane and admonish his father (he could have hit him, but he concentrates on Sloane). Before Klaus loses Luther, the newlyweds are able to have a sweet goodbye. "
Nothing is ever easy in this show, so Boss Guardian is knocked out only during Luther's emotional goodbye. When he wakes up, Five exclaims that he has found a coat of arms on the lobby floor. Six of the seven step on the star as Hargreaves stalls Allison. When Five reaches the last star, an electricity runs between the seven and the Guardian, and the Guardian finally dies.
As the rays of light begin to suck the life force out of everyone standing on the star, the hotel building dissolves into gold futuristic panels. Oblivion is a machine powered by the same particles that powered Sparblerose, and Hargreaves doesn't mind that members die to reset the universe. Allison refuses to let him sacrifice her family and instead kills him. A scythe to the head revealed his alien organs and green blood. The seven are freed, but the machine is ready, and Alison is cut off from the universe she wants to be in with the push of a red button. Victor tries to stop her, but instead decides to trust her and she resets the world.
The first scene we see in the new timeline is Alison arriving at her old house in search of Claire. Unlike earlier in the season, the girl in the room is her daughter, and the two are finally reunited. Also, Ray is there instead of her ex-husband, somehow brought from the 60s to the present day.
Back in New York, Diego, Klaus, Five, Victor, Lila, Sparrow Ben, and Luthor emerge from the elevator into the courtyard where the hotel used to be; the seven heroes' injuries are gone - Diego and Five's appendages have grown back and they seem to have lost their powers. Luther is not only alive, but back in his old, molted body, but Sloan has disappeared.
Everyone goes their separate ways: Luthor goes looking for Sloane, Klaus goes after his "fragile" newly undead brother, and Sparrow Ben sinks to calling them "bitches." The final shot of the season zooms in on Hargreaves' skyscraper-lined skyline, showing how strange its world is, with the big man's reborn wife Abigail by his side, all the way to the heights that dominate everything.
This was actually the second to last shot of the season. The mid-credit scene, set inside a subway car in Seoul, echoes the flashback at the beginning of the show, showing a kindly Ben smiling as sparks fly behind him. Before you all go wild, showrunner Steve Blackman confirmed in an interview with Collider (opens in new tab) that this is "the Ben we've known since Season 3." It will be an interesting story to see how Sparrow Ben goes from "later bitch" to that friendly smile.
It's no surprise that Season 3 ended with another big cliffhanger, but this time, fans have little idea what happens next. The show's first three seasons followed three volumes of Umbrella Academy comics. (The titles "Apocalypse Suite," "Dallas," and "Hotel Oblivion" also describe each season.) Volume 4, "Sparrow Academy," is still to be published, but reportedly influenced season 3.
For Umbrella Academy Season 4 (open in new tab), fan theorists can only theorize about the last three scenes (Allison, Umbrella, and mid-credit). Hargreaves is likely to finally upgrade from "worst father ever" to "aggressive big bad" in the next season, since the Umbrellas will not mesh well with the new timeline. (I wouldn't be surprised if Hargreaves considers the Umbrellas a loose end and plans to eliminate them.)
Allison is also cut off from the Umbrellas in the final scene and tied to them by a loose thread. All of Allison's siblings are healed and clean, but she still has a scar on her arm. She could also still have her own powers that she would use to prevent the creation of a timeline that would lose Claire and Ray. In other words, Dirk Allison will not be gone anytime soon.
However, Netflix has yet to announce a renewal for the show. The show has been No. 1 since it first aired, so fans should expect a go-ahead soon.
