Ryan Gosling gets a "devoted" tan for "Barbie"
Have you ever had the chance to see Ryan Gosling in a Ken doll? Canadian tuxedo, "Ken" underwear, 80's workout clothes ...... The "Barbie" movie keeps giving us pictures of the fabulous Gosling. And it's hard to talk about these photos without mentioning the actor's bronzed complexion. Of course, the perfectly tanned, deftly even, very dark tan is essential to Ken's overall vibe. Nevertheless, it was not easy to achieve such a perfect tan without an exorbitant amount of sun exposure.
"Unless there was a particularly big scene where the studio wanted his tan to look as fresh and 'perfect' as possible, we usually had to reapply his tan every week," the film's tanning expert, Kimberly Nkosi (open in new tab), told Marie Claire exclusively." In this case, [the ability to blend and control color] was key, especially with on-set tanning, such that the tan had to function under a variety of light sources."
To avoid blotches, unevenness, and less-than-perfect results, Nkosi developed a fairly intense routine of prepping, tanning, and hydrating to perfection. And she says that if Gosling had not been "dedicated" to this entire process, the "perfect" finish would not have been achieved.
"My favorite products used in Ken's transformation were primarily from Isle of Paradise." The products can be mixed into custom blends to create a natural-looking, tailored finish that matches the client's skin tone." She "always" used a medium shade on Gosling, "balancing his undertones and a touch of dark to look good on camera."
As for the skin shine that was obviously happening, she dabbed Gosling's skin with Dr. Hauschka's Lemon Lemongrass Vitalizing Body Oil, which has toning and firming properties (not that he needed it). To finish off the whole routine, she applied a bit of Glossier's Mango Butter to his lips.
