24 Hours with Sabrina Carpenter

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women get their work done in a day?

These are "fast times" for Sabrina Carpenter, 23, who is set to star in and produce the upcoming film "Alice in Wonderland," a musical reimagining of the classic fairy tale. But "actress" is just one of the many hats she wears: for example, Carpenter just released her first perfume and is working on her fifth album. The album will be released on July 15, but impatient fans can now stream Carpenter's new single, "Vicious." If it sounds like the album has been a long time coming, that's because the star wanted it to be the best it could be. She tells Marie Claire

, "In that sense, I may be a perfectionist, but I've also tried to learn over the past year to let things go before I'm ready to let them go."

Carpenter, sharing her (minimalist and subject to change) beauty routine with us, emphasizes that we all need to do what works for us in beauty, just as in life. She says, "Whenever I meet someone who is genuinely and unapologetically themselves, it's a beautiful thing to see and feel the radiance that radiates from them." So here are some of the things that work for her, and only her, on a daily basis.

When I'm working in music, I wake up a little more gracefully, sometimes at 9 or 10 a.m., but I usually get up much earlier. My alarm clock gets me up early. If it's a shooting day, it's usually before the sun comes up and before my head wakes up too. I know this is very cliché, but I try to make a list of things I am grateful for first thing in the morning. If I don't, I'll be weirdly affected by the news, good or bad.

Skin care is a daily time to myself that I feel is really important and definitely makes me feel better. I've been doing the same thing for a long time, but it's just like any other skin care routine: cleansing, toning, and sunscreen. Every time I do that I automatically feel better and a little more centered. I always try to find really good vitamin C products, I just started using 111SKIN (opens in new tab) vitamin C serum and it's really, really nice. I try both rollers and scalpers from time to time (when I have time), but most of the time I'm lucky to get my first skin care fix.

I started doing dance recitals when I was a little girl, maybe 3 or 4 years old. My mom was a dancer and I have three older sisters, so makeup and dressing up has always been a big part of my life, which probably led me to want to sing and act. I love to wear makeup and I love to play with it, but I don't wear makeup every day. I like to give my skin a break when I'm on set a lot. I try not to wear makeup all the time because I tend to sweat when I wear makeup and I tend to have super long days.

[There are different ways to apply makeup. I really like to do my own makeup, and it's definitely inspired by Brigitte Bardot, there were a lot of really great actresses in the 60s, and I liked to get inspiration from them. But when I do my own makeup, I use what works for me and what enhances my natural features. I have freckles, but most people don't notice them until they meet me. I'm at an age now where I'm finding things I like, trying to be playful and not take everything so seriously.

I'm a huge fan of Charlotte Tilbury (open in new tab). I love to emphasize my lips and I always, always love her lip liner and lipstick. I also started using a brand called ILIA (opens in new tab). I also love mascara. I also love perfume. I love a good fragrance. I never realized how much I love a good fragrance and how underrated a good fragrance can be.

As for hair care, to be honest, I don't do much. I try to avoid heat on my hair as much as possible. I have textured hair, so most days when I'm not working, I just use a sea salt spray. Really, that's kind of my rule. I can have days where I dress a lot, play a lot, and have a lot of fun, and then to balance that out, I can have days where I just rest and look like a really humble person who doesn't care too much about appearances.

In my mind, everyone is always listening to music, 24/7. I have speakers built into my closet. I also like to listen with headphones. Often people try to get my attention, so I usually wear headphones. It's like living in a weird bubble sometimes, but it's something I like to consume and it always inspires me. i also listen to vinyl a lot because i've been collecting records for 7 or 8 years now. My mom gave me a lot of old records and then I started going to stores all over the world. Every time I go to different countries, I go to different record stores. Lately, I've been listening to the new Rosalia album. It feeds me. I also listen to Dolly Parton a lot. There are a lot of artists I like.

Exercise is a bit [casual]. Not every day by any means, but I try to balance it out as much as I can, and at least once or twice a week I do something a little more disciplined. I take some kind of class or work out at home. Sometimes I go to Pilates with friends. I love working out with friends.

I love baths. I think baths are a lifesaver for me. Composing is my self-care. When I'm alone and really stressed out, I can spend hours at the piano.

I have a few favorites. There is a perfume I have been making since last year (sample sizes are available at Scent Beauty). Aside from that, I love Margiela perfumes (open in new tab). I think they are all amazingly different. I love sweet scents, not over-the-top scents, but definitely [sweet] scents.

Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda. Those two are definitely my favorites.

I usually wipe off my makeup with an oil-based cleanser, moisturize, and go to bed. I've actually been trying to minimize my routine a bit over the past few years and not carry as many products. I'm trying to consolidate it down to a few products.

[The moisturizer I use] changes a lot. My friends say, 'Look, you can use my moisturizer overnight,' and I just use it. [but] the Chanel moisturizer I've been using lately (opens in new tab) is really good.

I love being able to pass out without distraction. I can't remember when was the last time I watched a TV show. I just love sleep anyway because at the end of the day I feel like I've used up everything I have, and I want to go to sleep as soon as possible. [Sleep times] definitely change. It's an unpredictable time right now. Sometimes it's 9:00 at night, sometimes it's 2:00 in the morning. [My body] definitely gravitates toward my grandma. I get tired early, but now there are ways and tricks and coffee to stay awake if I need to stay awake. At my age... I am definitely disciplined, but I try to remind myself that if there is a time in my life when I am probably not going to sleep much, it is probably now.
