Who is Joseph Quinn, aka Eddie Munson in Stranger Things?

Season 4 of "Stranger Things" brings new faces to Hawkins High School as some of your favorite monster hunters enroll. In addition to Grace Van Dien, who plays Chrissy, the standout new character introduced this season is Eddie Munson, an 80s metalhead (including long hair) who runs Hawkins High's official Dungeons and Dragons group, the Hellfire Club. Eddie becomes friends with Mike and his friends and is soon involved in the latest mayhem from the Upside Down.

Joseph Quinn, who plays Eddie, is a rather mysterious celebrity, thanks to his dislike of social media. However, he comes to the world of "Stranger Things" with an impressive resume and a nerdy side, so he blends in well. Here's what we know about the Season 4 newcomer.

Although he plays an American high school nerd in "Stranger Things," the 29-year-old was born and raised in England, and in an interview with Nuit Magazine (opens in new tab), he says he has been acting since he was a baby, starting with school plays and continuing in elementary and middle school as a theater He says he continued as a scholarship student. He also attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, graduating in 2015.

Add Manson's name to the many talented Brits who have appeared in HBO's mega-hit. He played a Stark soldier named Connor in the season 7 episode "The Spoils of War." Specifically, he was one of the guards at the gates of Winterfell when Arya finally returned home.

In addition to her one-off appearances on GoT, she is best known for playing Arthur Havisham in the BBC One series "Dickensian" and for co-starring with Helen Mirren in the HBO mini-series "Catherine the Great." He also co-starred with Olivia Colman in "Mosquitos" at the National Theatre, which he described in an interview with Glass Magazine (opens in new tab) as "pretty magical."

Quinn has mentioned some of his favorite shows and movies in interviews, and he has a great sense of style. He told Glass Magazine in an interview that if he could appear in a remake of a classic film or show, he would like to play all the characters in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

He also cited Romain Roy in "Succession" when asked by L'Aquisto Gent magazine what role he would have liked to have played. Kieran Culkin's character in "Succession" is gory, and he delivers every line perfectly. His sense of humor and light touch with that character is enviable." But these iconic roles are defined by the actors who play them, and I think it's hard to imagine anyone else playing them."

Quinn had to abide by a no-spoilers policy when covering "Stranger Things," but he was open about the pressure of being part of this popular show. The actor told Collider (open in new tab) that he wants to do his character justice.

"There is a lot of dedication to this show and you don't want to mess that up," he said. 'So it's been a wonderful experience. It's surreal to be involved in something like this. It's such an honor to be a part of this season and to be amongst everyone who's trying to get it done."

He also touched on the challenge in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" (open in new tab), saying it was "daunting" to be a part of the show, but adding that he was "grateful" for the experience of working with the cast. 'They were really nice, just as I'd hoped. It's good to go to a strange place with strangers and leave that place with friends you really care about," he said.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab), Quinn opened up about the audition process and the reference book he used to create Eddie. Quinn said that the Duffers hired him after he sent in two audition tapes and used both heavy metal music and classic 80s films to connect with his character.

"'The Breakfast Club' was a great film about exploring a character. 'But I didn't want to pigeonhole him into anything. I made a few references to students who were older than me and who impressed me, who were pretty much misfits."

When asked about music, Quinn added that he listened to Metallica and Black Sabbath a lot (which makes sense since Eddie played Metallica's "Master of Puppets" at the Upside Down concert). He admitted, however, that he did not get into Dungeons & Dragons during his research.

"I bought the book, read a little bit, and thought, 'Okay, I can't do this,' and with all due respect to the D&D community, it didn't do anything for me. The first time I played it was a few months ago when I was in Los Angeles doing a little interview. It all depends on the dungeon master.

In the finale, when Eddie becomes a hero for the first time and plays his guitar to lure the bats in the Upside Down, Quinn was really playing on the big stage. The actor played part of the song, the show's music supervisor Nora Felder told Variety (opens in new tab).

"Joseph took a while to learn the guitar riffs and actually played along with the guide track. Everyone thought he did a great job."

Quinn also told the outlet that he had learned to play guitar when he was younger.

"I was lucky enough to learn guitar when I was younger so I had a good foundation. I was never a virtuoso, but when it came time to shoot, I was able to get through it," he said.

"I had a guitarist who was kind of a black belt in heavy metal play a solo for me. I couldn't do that, but I could do the rest. It was a great experience."

"For a lot of the crew, it was the first time since Pandemic started that we all felt like we were in a live house. It was a lot of fun to do that with Gaten," he added.

If you look up the actor and find only fan pages, it's because Quinn is not a fan of social media; in a 2017 interview with Nuit magazine, he said he got rid of his social media pages, implying that he wasted too much time (which, fair).

"I'm not on Facebook. I used to do it, but I spent a lot of time looking at other people's lives. 'I don't even do Instagram. It's an incredibly image-centric medium, and I think it devalues the use of words. I do Twitter, but I don't use it to promote myself online. It's a useful tool to see what's going on with news and other people. Some people have interesting things to say. It's mentally helpful, that's for sure. But I'm not on that team right now. I think it's also a useful tool for people to communicate."

But he may start sharing more on social media to promote himself. He recently launched Instagram (opens in new tab), and his Stranger Things character poster image shared on May 7 was his first post. So far, his posts have included promo shots of events and shows, as well as fun behind-the-scenes clips.

It's a good thing Quinn has an Instagram. Noah Schnapp (played by Will Byers) shared a Tik Tok revealing Dodger Cat's interest in Quinn after seeing the new season.

The clip includes a screenshot of a conversation between Schnapp and Doja, in which she asks Quinn if he has a girlfriend. The actor tells the rapper to send him a DM and kindly sends him a link to his co-star's Instagram. We expect an update on this unlikely pairing, and we'll be sure to keep you posted on the latest news.
