Body Language Expert Analyzes Prince William and Prince Harry's "Intimacy" at Past Commonwealth Games
It would be no exaggeration to say that in 2022, Prince William and Prince Harry's relationship is strained; since Prince William's wife, Kate Middleton, married into the royal family in 2011, the friendship between the brothers has grown even deeper. Today, the 2022 Commonwealth Games will kick off. It's the first time they've been held in the U.K. since 2014; eight years ago, the trio of William, Harry, and Kate attended the event together, and looking back at their photos, it's even clearer how much the family dynamic has changed.
According to the Mirror, body language expert Judy James, when the trio attended events such as field hockey and gymnastics, the siblings made certain gestures that showed the close bond they once had.
"The sharply mirrored tilted angle that Harry and William make for intimacy and more intimate conversation when people sit between them suggests that they are happier sitting together and enjoying play," James says.
In many photos taken from the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Kate sits between her husband and brother-in-law.
"Kate is not left out of the group. Harry seemed to share more relaxed fun and laughter with Kate than he did with William." Harry is a very lively comedian who goes out of his way to make his brother and sister-in-law laugh."
James also specifically noted Harry's "cheerful demeanor," which the Mirror reported was "in stark contrast to his later appearance with his brother and sister-in-law." She also noted that William and Kate were happy to spoil Harry's attention as the Duke of Sussex.
"Harry was the most brilliant man and made his brother less uptight in the process," James said.
"He must have made the cautious and self-conscious Kate giggle on a regular basis and made her royal duties more enjoyable."
Much has changed since then, she says.
"Comparing Harry's demeanor here with his recent, often dour expression and the haunted look in his eyes when he left the UK after tumbling headlong from this brother-sister intimacy, you can also see that the benefits of the original relationship were emphatically two or three-sided," James James says.
"Watching Harry, amused, funny, mischievous, and full of life, is like glimpsing into a recent but forgotten history."
This is not to say, James says, that tensions may not have already existed in 2014, but that eager trolls know that Harry has yet to meet his future wife Meghan Markle and is therefore happy to say that he looks so happy.
"It would be naïve to say that there wasn't already some resentment or competitiveness by now, but the benefits of the relationship seem very clearly to outweigh that," she says.
"While Harry is grinning happily and standing with his arms folded in a relaxed, high-status gesture, William is self-deprecating, standing with his arms outstretched in a self-protective fig-leaf posture that makes Harry look like the star of the show."
