Prince Charles confessed to Princess Diana on the eve of their wedding that he "didn't love her," a friend testified.
On July 29, 1981, 41 years ago yesterday, Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana were disproportionately matched, and Prince Charles was most likely in love with Camilla Parker-Bowles, now his second wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, who was in attendance at St. Paul's Cathedral with 3,500 others on the day of the wedding.
According to the Mirror, on the eve of the wedding, 32-year-old Prince Charles told Princess Diana, who had just turned 20 earlier that month, that he did not love her and did not want to enter into marriage under false premises. Naturally, this came as a great shock to the soon-to-be 20-year-old Princess Diana.
Speaking on an ITV documentary called The Diana Interview: Princess Diana's astrologer, Penny Thornton, said that Princess Diana confessed that she had "never thought that she would be able to marry a woman of her age.
"One of the most shocking things Diana told me was that the night before the wedding Charles told her he did not love her," Thornton said.
"I think Charles didn't want to go into the wedding with a false premise. It came as a shock to Diana.""It was a shock to Diana," Thornton said.
Charles and Diana had met only a few times before announcing their engagement in February 1981. (Diana replied, "Of course.") According to Thornton, Diana almost "did not have a wedding at that point." She even considered not attending the wedding. But despite the concerns on both sides, the wedding took place the next day."
Biographer Penny Juneau, who has written many books about the royal family, including "The Duchess: The Untold Story" about Camilla, claims that Charles also wanted to back out of the wedding, but thought it was too late.
"Charles was not convinced that marrying Diana was the right thing to do," Junod wrote, "but there was no way out, and he put on a brave face, sustained by the hope that marriage would change things.
By 1984, the couple had two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, and by the late 1980s the strain in the relationship was evident; they separated in 1992 and eventually divorced in 1996; after Diana died in a car accident in 1997, Prince Charles married Camilla in 2005.
