Read More"It's far more than you can imagine." と@library.dreamerは絶賛する. It is "a romance, a novel of self-discovery, a novel of work-life balance, a novel of managing relationships outside of love.
While the book was divided on Angie's love interest, Ricky, most readers were strongly attracted to Angie herself. 'No one has such a realistic protagonist,' wrote @chapterswithus_, 'and many can relate to the pressures she feels from her parents, her job, and her friends.' She is strong, resourceful, and flawed." The relationship between best friends and roommates Nia and Angie was praised as especially real." Sometimes we hurt the people we love the most when we only mean the best."
Each month, we collect reviews from our virtual book club members so that everyone looking for their next great read can have a collection of recommendations. Here is what #ReadWithMC readers have to say about "On Rotation."
"Prayers answered: a WOMEN IN STEM, ROMANCE, featuring a black female doctor. ON ROTATION, follows the life of Angela, a medical student. She fails her exams, a medical student's worst nightmare, her boyfriend breaks up with her, and her friends drift further and further apart. But as one door closes, another opens and Ricky appears. Ricky is a caring but complex man who accepts Angela as she is. Thank you, Charlene Obovi - you have made my dreams come true. Having a black medical student in a romance book is magical, and as a teenager I definitely would have read this before I started my medical school journey. I enjoyed learning about Ghanaian culture and the footnotes were very helpful. Obuobi accurately captures the many aspects of medical school: the sacrifices you have to make, not only for yourself but also for your family and friends, the pep talks from your seniors, the endless circle-jerking, and the socializing with the patients. Everything in this novel is written with great care. I fell in love with Angela. She is a hardworking, outspoken woman who would not have been as successful without her supportive friends and family. The supporting cast also contributes with their own unique stories featuring LGBT+ and API. And most of all, I loved that Angela was present outside of the romance. In most books, the scenes where Angela interacts with her love interest are centered on FMC, but Angela had a life outside of Ricky. This is a well needed romance book and I look forward to seeing what Obuovi writes next. ❤️ If you like "The Love Hypothesis" and TV medical dramas, you'll love this book.

"There are mild spoilers. Read at your own risk. And I know this is not my traditional kind of post, but if you need a hodgepodge pattern to float your boat, there is one with some gorges on my pocket chief. I smoked "On Rotation" by shirlywhirlmd. I read it cover to cover in one day. It might be better described as a slice of life rather than a romance. On the surface, it's a story about a medical student and an artist/graphic designer, so I felt like I was watching. The quirks of being the daughter of immigrants with a diverse group of friends, activities that are eerily similar to things I've done with friends, footnotes that made me laugh so hard I was itching to email them to a friend I was planning to do a book club with (of course, I had no self-control and she had to get a copy of I finished reading it before I received it, oops), the scene where the main character describes being comfortable with his body after seeing all kinds of bodies through rotations (this happened to me, when I was working as an MA a few years ago). It's exciting to read something written by a physician and artist who is currently in a fellowship in cardiology (hence me posing in front of a heart I drew on a piece of EKG paper). I sometimes feel out of place in my non-medical interests, but she has shown me that it is possible.

"I really enjoyed this book and I really connected with it. On Rotation is about Angela Appiah, a medical student, and how she balances life and love. I went to pharmacy school instead of medical school, and I know what it's like to be so busy with academics, not having much time to spend with family and friends, and of course tripping over questions from the not-so-friendly preceptors during rotations. (I even cried during a presentation once...) I have experienced all of these things. It's crazy that so many people are going through the same thing. Let's talk about Ricky. I didn't like him at first because I don't like guys who pretend to be uninterested but the next day they're all over your face. Spoiler alert, there is a very sweet grand romantic gesture. I love Angie's circle of friends and they always encourage her. There is also some LGBQTIA representation in this novel. All in all, I enjoyed On Rotation. See you then.

"First, I was impressed by the dedication page." For Black Nerd Girls " It is an exciting world right now to read a novel about a Black woman in a romantic relationship with typical conflicts and happy endings, just like any other race in the world. Growing up, I never had this experience. I am glad there are Black women writers out there who are changing the narrative. Nerd Girl and I completely identify with each other. Angie is a Ghanaian-American medical student beginning her clinical rotation. She knows she has to work extra hard to redeem herself and improve her residency potential. Nevertheless, she also has to go through life like everyone else. She has parents who don't realize when to stop putting pressure on her to succeed, close friends who don't understand the strain of medicine and feelings of separation, and a romantic relationship where she struggles to be truly seen, accepted, and loved. Her love interest, Ricky, is another character as complex as she is. He is also perceptive, caring, and easy to fall in love with. He knows what he wants, in a way, but is too cautious to see it. I enjoyed the plot involving Angie and Ricky, her friend Nia, and her parents' respective conflicts. Much is said about the parental pressure to succeed. The characters develop wonderfully, and if you keep an open mind, you really come to understand and love them. I especially loved Angie and Ricky's growth despite their problems. No relationship is straightforward. There is no medical jargon in this book, so don't be afraid to be crushed by the jargon. Relevant terms are explained in footnotes. The footnotes were very interesting because they explained some non-medical things and felt like a progressive commentary on Angie's mind. Needless to say, it's an easy read. I enjoyed reading it.
